What can I do to protect myself if I want to travel to affected area?
Travellers should follow standard precautions regarding respiratory infection if they travel to areas where human infections with novel influenza have been reported. All travellers to Mexico1 should respect general hygiene measures such as:
- Avoiding close contact with people who are sick. When you are sick, keep your distance from others to protect them from getting sick too.
- Staying home from work, school, and avoid running errands when you are sick. This will help prevent others from catching your illness.
- Avoiding crowding or mass gatherings.
- Covering your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. It may prevent those around you from getting sick. Throw the tissue in the bin after you use it.
- Washing your hands will help protect you from germs. Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners may also be effective. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth because germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose, or mouth.
